September 23, 2024 — In a significant move toward promoting inclusivity in education, six visually impaired trainee teachers at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) have been provided with laptops.

This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Education’s ongoing efforts to ensure equal access to learning for all.

The distribution took place on Friday through a collaboration between the Office of the Assistant Chief Education Officer (SEND), the Guyana Council of Organizations for Persons with Disabilities (GCOPD), and CPCE’s Student Services Department.

The trainees, who are enrolled in the Associate Degree in Disability Studies, received laptops equipped with text-to-speech software designed to improve their learning experience.

To further support these students, the CPCE has made program accommodations, offering a flexible 2-3 year timeframe for them to complete their studies.

Additionally, tutoring services will be provided to help ensure their academic success.

This initiative reflects the Ministry of Education’s commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment. It follows the global observance of the 2023 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, themed “United in Action to Rescue and Achieve the SDGs for, with, and by Persons with Disabilities,” highlighting the Government of Guyana’s dedication to empowering persons with disabilities
