November 2 2026
A 20-year-old Venezuelan national accused of taking a seven-month-old baby from the child’s home in Port Kaituma has been charged with child stealing and remanded to prison.
Dariana Figuera, a babysitter of White Water Village, North West District, appeared virtually on Monday before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court.
The charge, brought under Section 90(a) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01, stems from the infant’s disappearance on October 28, 2026.
Investigators said the child’s mother had left the baby in Figuera’s care while she attended work. Figuera allegedly left the residence with the infant and travelled by air from Port Kaituma to Ogle International Airport without the mother’s knowledge or permission.
Police subsequently located the woman and baby at Hague Backdam, West Coast Demerara, at about 23:20 hrs that same day.
The infant was safely recovered, while Figuera was arrested and later charged.
She was not required to plead to the charge. Bail was refused, and she was remanded until November 11, 2026.
