Four police ranks attached to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station have been arrested and are being held at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) as investigations continue into the death of 32-year-old Gavin Douglas.
The arrests came as a post-mortem examination was conducted on Monday by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh, who determined that Douglas died from a brain haemorrhage caused by blunt-force trauma.
According to a police statement, during the examination, two Taser studs were removed from Douglas’ body and lodged as evidence.
Douglas, a labourer of Crane, West Coast Demerara, and Recht-Door-Zee, Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, died after being taken into police custody at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station on Saturday.
The Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Guyana Police Force said the matter is being treated seriously and that appropriate action will be taken against any rank found culpable. The investigation is ongoing.
A post-mortem examination conducted today has found that Gavin Douglas died from severe blunt-force trauma to the head, which caused bleeding in the brain, while also revealing blunt-force injuries to his abdomen and other parts of his body.
His official Post Mortem report, listed the cause of death as a cerebral haematoma, a collection of blood within the brain that can result from a fall.
The examination was conducted by Government Pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh.
Douglas was arrested on Saturday, October 31, in connection with an armed robbery at Vreed-en-Hoop and taken to the police station. Ranks alleged that he became aggressive while being escorted to a cell, threw faeces at them and had to be tasered twice before being handcuffed and locked up.
He was later reportedly found frothing at the mouth and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he died.
