GPL points to foul play in widespread blackout today

Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) suspects deliberate interference with its transmission infrastructure after a fault on a major power line triggered widespread outages across its service area on Friday morning.
The L2 Transmission Line, which runs parallel to the L4 line between the Grove and Sophia substations, tripped at approximately 8:12 a.m., causing a significant loss of supply to the national electricity grid.
In a statement, GPL said the L2 line had been inspected on Thursday, October 29, and was found to be free of faults and vegetation, less than 24 hours before the incident.
The line reportedly tripped on an earth fault involving the C-phase conductor, which GPL described as the lowest of the three conductors and the one closest to the ground.
Following the incident, technical teams conducted extensive inspections but reportedly found no fault, vegetation or physical condition that could explain the trip.
Based on the circumstances, GPL said it strongly suspects deliberate interference with the electricity network.
The company condemned any attempt to sabotage critical infrastructure, warning that such actions could endanger lives and disrupt homes, businesses, hospitals and other essential services.
GPL said it has launched a full investigation and will hand over any evidence of unlawful activity to the relevant authorities for further action. It is also increasing surveillance and protection of its critical transmission assets.
The company has appealed to members of the public to report suspicious activity near its power lines, towers or substations to GPL or the nearest police station.
GPL said its technical teams worked to restore electricity supply and thanked customers for their patience and understanding.
