GDF, Police make strong start to 2026/ 27 campaign in Women’s D1 League

The Guyana Defence Force Women made a pristine start to their title defence in the Guyana Football Federation’s Women’s Division One League on Wednesday evening, unleashing an 11- goal assault on Western Tigers Football Club.
In the second game on the night, Abiocie Heywood opened the scoring for the defending champions in the 3rd minute, taking advantage of a lose, deflected ball off the Ann’s Grove keeper’s save to slot home her team’s first goal.
Glendy Lewis extended the score two minutes later, tapping home an assist from Sandra Johnson. By the 18th, Johnson added her own name to the scoresheet with a close- range shot. Captain Glengie Lewis then sent two powerful shots in from the top of the box in the22nd and 23rd minutes to push GDF Women to a 5-0 lead at the half.
In the second segment, Jalade Trim entertained with a hattrick in the 38th, 42nd and 52nd; the most impressive being the second goal which was sent in with a ‘back heel’.
Glendy added another goal in the 36th while Zorina Alli registered a brace in the 50th and 56th minutes for GDF’s 11 goal tally.
Earlier that evening, the Guyana Police Force Women also had a dominant start to their campaign, getting past Ann’s Grove United FC 5-0.
It was a slow first half for the law officers, who could only put a one goal difference between themselves and Ann’s Grove United FC in the first half. Capitalising on the build off a corner, Tiandi Smith tapped in Sasha James’ cross at the back post for the lead in the 16th minute.
Janelle Edmondson came to the party in the second half, netting a hattrick in the 34th, 44th and 55th minutes while Marth Chance added the cherry on top with their fifth strike in the 46th minute.
