MoE Promises Swift Action to Rebuild Fire Damaged Kwakwani School

The Ministry of Education has assured that urgent steps are being taken to resume classes at Kwakwani Secondary School, after a fire in the early hours of Sunday, August 24, 2025, destroyed a section of the building in Pathville, Kwakwani, Region 10.
According to preliminary reports from the Guyana Police Force, the blaze began in the south-western wing of the school and quickly spread, consuming the Information Technology laboratory, Head Teacher’s office, auditorium (which had been used as classrooms), library, staff room, and washroom facilities.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
According to press statement from the Ministry, within hours of the incident, a Ministry team led by Deputy Chief Education Officer (Administration), Mrs. Tiffany Harvey, along with Assistant Chief Education Officers Sherwyn Blackman and Sauda Kadir-Grant, visited the site to assess the damage and plan for continuity of classes.
The Ministry said it is working closely with the Regional Education Department to ensure that students can return to school by the last week of September 2025. Officials have also pledged that the destroyed section of the school will be rebuilt to modern and higher standards.
