Minister of Health-Dr Frank Anthony

Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony has revealed that Guyana is on a path to provide world class healthcare to its citizens.

Speaking at the opening of the Sheriff General Hospital at Leonora Region Three earlier today, Dr Anthony noted that President of Guyana Dr Irfaan Ali, has articulated his vision on how sectors of Guyana will develop.

Dr Anthony lauded the initiative taken by the Sheriff Group of Companies, noting that the opening of this facility is the start of greater things for the business and the country.

He expressed that the modern laboratory services and state-of the-art X-RAY department that the new hospital provides will be of great need to the general public, especially persons of Region Three, in addition to the other amenities being offered including dentistry etc, while citing the facility’s existence as “good quality healthcare, close to home.”

The Minister added that Guyana’s health sector being given close attention and multiple investments have been made not only by the private sector, but also by the government.

He noted that the government is intent on delivering more services on the primary health care level, referencing the Public Hospital to be constructed at DeKindren.

Dr Anthony further stated that with the growing population in the surrounding areas, the location (DeKindren) is an ideal location for the new hospital.

In addition, the government is focused on providing services for children, hence the construction of a new Maternal Health and Child Health Hospital at Ogle on the East Coast Demerara.

The Minister said that it is of concern that certain medical procedures have to be done abroad, as the aim of the government is to eradicate that and have everything done here in Guyana.

He stated that focus is also being placed in investing and establishing hospitals in the interior areas, with focus on communities such as Lethem, Moruca, Kamarang, Kato etc.

He noted that Guyana now has a plethora of doctors specializing in approximately 18 different fields.
