An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Reyna Depeazer, a 16-year-old girl who was struck by a stray bullet while liming with a friend on Mango Lane, East Ruimveldt, late Thursday night.
Depeazer, a resident of East La Penitence, Georgetown, had been receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) but succumbed to her injuries on Friday.
Police identified the suspect as Travel Daniels Hammer, an unemployed resident of Trench Road, East La Penitence. He was taken into custody around 1:00 a.m. on Mandela Avenue while driving the same white Fielder Wagon (registration number PYY 2896) allegedly used during the incident.
According to investigators, Depeazer and a teenage friend were seated on a motorcycle when the suspect approached in the vehicle. He reportedly exited with a handgun and confronted another man nearby. During the ensuing argument, the suspect allegedly discharged the weapon, and a single round struck Depeazer in the neck. She collapsed on the spot, and the suspect fled the scene.
Responding officers rushed the injured teen to the hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery before eventually passing away.
Following his arrest, Hammer was informed of the allegations and taken to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters. Police said searches conducted on his person, vehicle, and residence did not uncover the weapon used in the shooting. However, he was swabbed for gunpowder residue, and the vehicle was impounded.
He remains in police custody as investigations continue.
