A 27-year-old man lost his life while a teenage student remains hospitalised following a collision involving two motorcycles on the Mibicuri Public Road, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice, on Wednesday evening.

Dead is Jermaine Smart of Rose Hall Town. The other rider, 14-year-old Swanti Culpepper, a student of Mibicuri Secondary School, is receiving treatment at the No. 75 Public Hospital, where his condition is listed as serious.

The accident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. According to police, Smart was travelling west along the roadway when his motorcycle collided with another being ridden east by Culpepper, whose motorcycle allegedly did not have its headlamp illuminated.

The impact threw both riders onto the road, leaving them unconscious.

They were taken to the Mibicuri Public Hospital, where Smart succumbed while undergoing treatment. His body has since been taken to a funeral home pending a post-mortem examination.

Police have impounded one of the motorcycles for examination, while efforts are underway to locate the other vehicle. Investigations into the fatal crash are continuing.
