A $20M modern sporting facility is being built to benefit the community of Section ‘A’ Block Y Grove/Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara. The facility is expected to be completed before the end of this year, according to Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal along with the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr who visited the community on Tuesday.

During the visit, the Ministers consulted on the project where residents were given the opportunity to offer recommendations to improve the facility.

Minister Ramson, during the outreach said that the facility will be used as a model for other safe spaces in areas and housing schemes across the country. The minister further noted that the very early focus of his ministry was to develop safe spaces in highly populated areas.

The facility once completed will accommodate different sports, and will feature a track for athletes, a football/cricket ground as well as swings, sea-saws and slides. There will also be solar lights installed for security purposes.

“Given the number of residents in the housing schemes and how rapidly they are developing, this became an obvious choice for us to start targeting now where we can get the kind of development,” Minister Ramson said.

During his address Minister Croal said that the rapid development of the East Bank seen with the recent construction of the East Bank four-lane highway, will pave for the development of a new and expanded housing schemes.

He said the ministry is undertaking projects in housing schemes to ensure persons have access to recreational spaces, and as such, the CH&PA is undertaking a number of  projects in housing schemes under its purview.
