Dolly Parton, the legendary singer, songwriter and actress who rose from humble beginnings in the mountains of East Tennessee to become one of country music’s most celebrated figures, has died at age 80, according to an announcement from her family today.
Parton’s death marks the end of a career spanning more than six decades, during which she became known as the “Queen of Country” and established herself as a beloved figure in music, film and American popular culture.
Her remarkable catalogue includes timeless hits such as Jolene, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You, while her work as a songwriter, actress, philanthropist and entrepreneur cemented her status as a global icon.
The reported death comes months after Parton announced in May 2026 that she was cancelling a Las Vegas performance. At the time, she said she had been undergoing treatment for kidney stones for several years.
Parton leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond country music, with generations of fans drawn to her distinctive voice, songwriting talent, personality and enduring contributions to the entertainment industry.
Her head of security announced her death Tuesday on Instagram.
