Coast Guard, GPF intercept ‘Go-Fast’ vessel after river pursuit

A joint maritime patrol involving the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard and the Guyana Police Force intercepted a ‘go-fast’ vessel at Friendship, East Bank Demerara, on Tuesday night after the vessel allegedly failed to stop when signalled.

According to a police report, the incident occurred at approximately 9:45–9:50 p.m. on August 25, 2026, when Joint Services ranks, acting on information received, observed the vessel travelling at a high rate of speed into the mouth of the Demerara River towards Friendship.

The vessel was signalled by siren to stop but reportedly failed to comply, prompting a pursuit. It was eventually intercepted at a wharf at Friendship.

During the pursuit, ranks reportedly observed a bag being thrown from the vessel into the Demerara River. It has not yet been determined who threw the bag or what it contained, while efforts are underway to locate and recover it.

Three persons were found aboard the vessel when it was intercepted, including Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed. Five other persons, who are suspected to have travelled aboard the vessel, were reportedly observed at the wharf.

The Guyana Police Force and Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard are jointly investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the attempted evasion and the disposal of the bag.
