GECOM Dismisses False Claims of Ballot Box Tampering

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has strongly denied social media claims alleging that ballot boxes in Districts 3, 4, and 6 were opened prematurely.

The allegation, which surfaced in a Facebook post purportedly made by a social media activist suggested that sealed boxes had been tampered with.

GECOM, however, dismissed the post as “blatantly false” and said it appeared to be an attempt to sow confusion and chaos in the ongoing electoral process.

In a statement, the Commission clarified that ballot boxes can only be opened in the event of a recount, which must be formally requested after an official declaration of results.

Since no declaration had been made at the time of the post, GECOM said the claim was “entirely baseless.”

The Commission renewed its call for stakeholders to refrain from spreading unverified information, particularly during this politically sensitive period. It further urged the public to be vigilant against misinformation circulating online.

GECOM assured that it remains committed to completing all electoral procedures efficiently, transparently, and in strict compliance with the law.

” GECOM Rejects Facebook Post on the Opening of Ballot Boxes

2nd September, 2025 GEORGETOWN

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has noted the circulation of a Facebook post allegedly by Melly Mel” accusing GEC OM of opening ballot boxes in districts 3, 4 and 6 respectively.

These allegations are blatantly false and are clearly designed to cause public confusion and chaos. In this regard, it must be emphasized the opening of any sealed ballot box can be done only if there is a request for a recount after a declaration is done. The fact that no declaration was done at the time of the post, meant that GECOM could not open any ballot box.

GECOM therefore renews it call for stakeholders to desists from publishing uanverified information and urges the public to be aware of the heightened spread of disinformation in this sensitive pollical environment,

GECOM is working to ensure thatit completes allihe requisite procedures in an efficient manner and in conformity with the legal requirements”
