Iva Wharton Elected President of Guyana Press Association

Senior Journalist Iva Wharton of Capitol News has been elected President of the Guyana Press Association (GPA), following the Association’s elections, held today at rhe Theatre Guild in Georgetown.
Joining Wharton on the new executive are Ariana Gordon of Kaieteur News, who was elected Vice President; Svetlana Marshall of News Source, serving as Treasurer; and Samantha Alleyne Williams of Stabroek News, who was elected Assistant Treasurer.

The elected committee members include veteran journalists Royston Drakes, Miranda LaRose, Gordon Moseley, and Sherwin Belgrave.
Attorney-at-law Dela Britton acted as the Returning Officer for the elections.
The Guyana Press Association plays a key role in advocating for media rights, press freedom, and professional standards in journalism across the country.
Nazima Raghubir, the outgoing President of the Guyana Press Association, opted not to seek re-election or pursue any other executive role within the organisation.
Throughout her tenure, Raghubir was known for her steadfast advocacy in defending press freedom and journalists’ rights. In her closing remarks, she reaffirmed her commitment to continue fighting for the necessary freedoms that support a strong and independent media in Guyana.
