“He took two breaths and that was it” — Wife recounts final moments of Franklyn ‘Franky’ Sauers

For Varund Sehadeo called Varsha, Sunday night began with an ordinary phone call but ended with her rushing to the scene of a violent confrontation that claimed the life of her husband, Franklyn “Franky” Sauers.

The 34-year-old fisherman, of Belvedere Corentyne, was fatally stabbed at Albion Front, Corentyne, on Sunday night.

Speaking about the heartbreaking moments, the disdraught Sehadeo said the night took a disturbing turn after she received a call from the wife of the man now accused of killing her husband.

The woman reportedly asked whether ‘Franky’ was with her husband, saying she had been trying unsuccessfully to reach him.

Sehadeo told her that her husband was not at home either and subsequently called Franky to find out where he was.

‘Franky’ answered and told her that he was on his way to drop his friend (the suspect) home.

According to Sehadeo, the man, known as “Baba”, worked alongside her husband and was the captain of the boat on which Franky worked.

She subsequently sent a message to Baba’s wife informing her that Franky was bringing her husband home. She said there was no immediate response.

Minutes later, however, the woman called back, screaming and telling Sehadeo that the two men had become involved in an altercation and were stabbing each other.

The frantic call left Sehadeo desperate to understand what was happening.

Because her own phone has a fault which prevents the other person from hearing her properly, she used her father’s phone to call the woman back.

Sehadeo said the woman told her that Franky had fallen to the ground following the altercation.

She immediately ended the call and initially contacted her brother to come and collect her. But with little time to waste, she decided to take her son and travel to the location herself on an e-bike.

When they arrived, Sehadeo said she saw her husband’s car parked in front of the suspect’s residence.

The vehicle’s engine was still running.

Franky’s hat was lying on the ground.

She ran into the yard, desperately searching for her husband, before being directed to the back of the house.

There, she said, she found the man she loved lying motionless in a pool of blood.

She and her 12-Y-O son rushed to his father and began shaking him, hoping to get a response.

Sehadeo said Franky took two breaths.

Those were his last.

“He took two breaths and that was the last,” she recalled.

In the midst of the horror, Sehadeo said the man responsible was sitting nearby on an old refrigerator, watching.

She confronted him and asked what he had done.

According to Sehadeo, Baba responded: “me na know what me do”.

The police areived shortly after along with her brothers, and took over the scene, as the family struggled to come to terms with the sudden and violent loss.

For Sehadeo, the tragedy has left behind not only grief but a child who witnessed his father’s final moments.

Police investigation

Police are investigating the alleged murder, which occurred at about 22:00hrs on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at Albion Front, Corentyne, Berbice.

According to police, Sauers and the 28-year-old suspect, a fisherman of Albion Front, were known to each other.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was at his residence when Sauers reportedly entered the house, where an altercation subsequently occurred.

Police ranks responding to the scene found Sauers motionless in the living room with apparent stab wounds to his neck and left rib area.

The suspect was contacted at the scene, arrested and taken to Albion Police Station, where he remains in custody.

Sauers was taken to Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was subsequently taken to Ramoo Funeral Home and is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Investigations are continuing.
