The father of six-year-old Orlando Jaikarran, whose decomposing body was found in a Berbice canal with his head, left hand and part of a leg missing, was on Friday remanded to prison for the brutal murder of his son.
Bharatt Jaikarran, also known as “Vijai,” “Crank” or “Ravi,” of Lot 250 Plantation Hope, Bath, West Coast Berbice, appeared at the Weldaad Magistrates’ Court, where the murder charge was read to him.
He was subsequently remanded to the New Amsterdam Prison.
Orlando’s decomposing remains were discovered on Tuesday, October 20, in the Waterloo Main Canal at Bath Settlement, Berbice, five days after he was reportedly killed.
The child had been reported missing on October 15, the same day he was allegedly slain.
CCTV footage recorded on October 15 reportedly showed Jaikarran leaving with his son and later returning alone, raising further questions about the child’s disappearance and death.
The case has taken a disturbing turn, with Jaikarran reportedly telling investigators that he killed the child following consultations with a ‘Pujari’.
He allegedly claimed that the religious official was present when Orlando was chopped on the neck before his body was thrown into a canal.
Investigators also reportedly recovered ritualistic items, including camphor and agarbatti, from a blood-soaked area where the child was believed to have been killed.
Meanwhile, 47-year-old Hindu religious official Ishwar Srikishun remains in custody as investigators gather further evidence and await forensic test results.
Jaikarran was detained on Thursday, October 15, after Orlando was reported missing. The investigation is continuing as authorities seek to establish the full circumstances surrounding the child’s killing and the alleged involvement of others.
