Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) is carrying out immediate corrective works across the electricity network while accelerating an approximately US$800 million grid-modernisation programme aimed at reducing faults and improving the reliability of electricity supply nationwide.
During a press conference led by Head of GPL’s Executive Management Committee, Kesh Nandlall, officials said recent service interruptions were caused by several separate incidents, including electrical faults at the Kingston and another substation, as well as feeder trips in sections of the network.
Technical teams were deployed to identify and correct the faults and restore power to affected customers as quickly and safely as possible. Emergency works were also carried out at Houston following an interruption that affected customers from the Ruimveldt Industrial Site to Nandy Park.
Nandlall also urged customers to conserve energy, particularly during periods of peak demand, while reaffirming GPL’s commitment to developing a smarter, more efficient and responsive electricity grid.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer Bharat Harjohn said GPL is carrying out improvements to its feeders, with various analytics being used to identify weaknesses and determine the most effective ways to strengthen the system.
Meanwhile, Head of Engineering and Projects Ryan Ross outlined the scope of the company’s wider modernisation programme, which includes new 230-kilovolt transmission lines, additional substations, new 69-kilovolt transmission infrastructure and approximately 350 kilometres of medium-voltage distribution networks.
GPL is also working toward establishing a smart grid by 2030. The technology is expected to allow the company to monitor the network in real time, identify developing faults earlier and respond more rapidly to disruptions.
The modernisation programme is intended to create a more resilient and interconnected electricity network capable of meeting Guyana’s growing residential, commercial and industrial demand.
GPL said the ongoing investments are aimed at addressing immediate network challenges while building the infrastructure needed to deliver a more reliable and efficient electricity service over the long term.
