Fire destroys Regent Household Electronics in Georgetown

All staff members have been accounted for following a massive fire that tore through Regent Household Electronics on Regent Street, Georgetown, on Wednesday.

Owner Shaheed Hamid confirmed that all employees were accounted for as firefighters battled the intense blaze, which sent thick smoke across sections of central Georgetown and caused extensive damage to the commercial property.

The fire was eventually brought under control, with Deputy Fire Chief Wayne Scotland confirming that the blaze had been contained to the affected building.

However, sections of the structure collapsed during firefighting operations.

A house located behind the Household Plus building was also damaged, while the neighbouring DM Beauty World reportedly sustained some damage.

Several streets in the surrounding area were temporarily closed as emergency crews worked to contain the fire and safeguard nearby properties and members of the public.

Regent Street between Light and Albert Streets was among the areas affected by traffic restrictions.

Hamid told reporters that this was the second major fire he has experienced at the location.

The property previously housed the Grand Coastal Guest House, which was destroyed by fire in 2009.

Household Plus, also known as Regent Household Electronics, has also been associated with other major fires at the location, including a second blaze on October 18, 2009, which was later confirmed by the Guyana Fire Service to have been deliberately set.

Regent Household Electronics has operated for years as a retailer of household appliances and electronics in Georgetown’s busy Regent Street commercial district.

The cause of today’s fire has not yet been determined, while the full extent of the damage and financial losses is still being assessed.

Firefighters remained at the scene working to extinguish remaining flames and secure the affected area as investigations into the cause of the blaze continue.
