President Ali Holds Meeting with GPL

Earlier today, President Dr. Irfaan Ali convened a crucial meeting at State House with the Board of Directors and management representatives from Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL), the Power Producers and Distributors Incorporated (PPDI), and Wartsila.

This gathering aimed to address pressing issues within the energy sector and strategize for the future.

During the meeting, President Ali expressed his discontent with the performance of GPL, highlighting a range of challenges inherited by his administration.

These challenges, stemming from a lack of maintenance and investment between 2015 and 2020, have significantly impacted the utility’s ability to meet the growing demands of consumers.

The discussion delved into various issues, including the exponential surge in demand, aging infrastructure, and deficiencies in transmission redundancy.

In response to these concerns, President Ali announced plans for a follow-up meeting later in the day, emphasizing the urgency of finding viable solutions to enhance the country’s energy landscape. Notably, the Government has already initiated discussions with UK Export Finance (UKEF) to explore potential financing avenues for improving transmission infrastructure.

Moreover, President Ali urged GPL to explore alternative options for bridging energy to address the escalating demand while awaiting the completion of the gas-fired power plant.

With an anticipated increase in demand of approximately 30MW this year, swift action is imperative to prevent disruptions to the country’s power supply.

The outcome of these discussions underscores the Government’s commitment to revitalizing the energy sector and ensuring reliable electricity access for all citizens. As stakeholders collaborate to navigate the challenges ahead, a concerted effort is underway to propel Guyana towards a sustainable and prosperous energy future.
