48-year-old Buxton resident, Junior Garraway was shot during a roadside confrontation with a Police Inspector Ramdat along the Buxton Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara, on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 15:15 hrs and involved the minibus driver and a 46-year-old Police Inspector attached to the Tactical Services Unit.

According to preliminary police investigations, the minibus driver was travelling along the embankment when an encounter occurred between him and the Inspector, who was driving a motor car.

An argument subsequently developed between the two men, during which the circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation.

Police said that during the incident, the Inspector allegedly discharged several rounds from his service firearm, resulting in the minibus driver sustaining suspected gunshot injuries to his chest and left leg.

The injured man was taken to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor and admitted. His condition is listed as serious but stable.

A third motor vehicle that was in the vicinity was also reportedly struck during the incident. The vehicle, along with the cars driven by the two men, was examined as part of the investigation.

Following the incident, the Inspector reported the matter to police and handed over his service firearm, a 9mm Glock 19 pistol, along with 13 live rounds of ammunition. The firearm and ammunition have been lodged pending examination.

CCTV cameras were identified in the area, and efforts are being made to obtain footage that could assist investigators in determining what transpired.

Police say the Inspector is presently under close arrest and is assisting police in Regional Division #4 ‘C’ and the Office of Professional Responsibility with the investigation.

Investigations are ongoing.
