Driver in deadly Nismes crash fined $40,000, jailed for 4yrs, 6 months
Compton Bagot, 35, was found guilty on four counts of causing death by careless driving in the horrific accident that occurred on November 2019 at Nismes, West Bank Demerara (WBD). When the case was called at the Wales Magistrate’s Court before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty on Wednesday, he was fined $20,000 for failing to render assistance to the injured people and $20,000 for failing to report the accident.
The sentences for Bagot, which total four years and six months in prison, will run concurrently. A month of imprisonment will also be imposed if the fines are not paid.
Bagot of La Retraite, West Bank Demerara (WBD) was arrested and initially charged on December 3, 2019. At his first appearance in court then, he pleaded not guilty and was placed on $100,000 bail for each count of causing death by dangerous driving.
The matter then went to trial and on March 1, 2023, Bagot was found guilty.
He was remanded to prison until March 22 (Wednesday) for sentencing and a probation report.
According to reports, on November 30, 2019, Bagot was driving minibus BYY 2981 along the Nismes Public Road when he collided with a Toyota Premio motorcar. The car being driven by 52-year-old William Glen had just exited a gas station.
Glen along with three other passengers from the minibus perished in the accident, namely, 12-year-old Maria Bisnauth, 27-year-old Ayesha Sealy and Zavier Taiesha, 22.
