
Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred around 08:30 hrs on Friday, October 11, 2024, on the Le Ressouvenir public road, East Coast Demerara, resulting in the death of 85-year-old Stephen Correia.
The accident involved motor car #PAG 7093, driven by 58-year-old Garfield Hoppie, a carpenter from LBI, and pedestrian Stephen Correia, a pensioner residing at Lot 1, Le Ressouvenir, ECD.
According to police reports, the car was heading west along the southern carriageway of Le Ressouvenir public road at a reportedly high speed when Correia attempted to cross the road from south to north and stepped into the vehicle’s path.
As a result of the collision, Correia fell onto the road, sustaining injuries to his left hand, left ankle, and other parts of his body. He was picked up in a semi-conscious state by public-spirited citizens, placed in an ambulance, and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver, Garfield Hoppie, has been arrested and is cooperating with the investigation. The body of Stephen Correia is at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Mortuary, with a post-mortem examination scheduled for Monday, October 14, 2024.
