No schedule blackouts during elections week

The statement issued by the power company

Effective today, February 29, 2020, the Guyana Power and Light Inc. will be not be conducting any scheduled power outages to any part of Guyana. This is according to the company in a statement that was issued on Friday evening.

“In order to ensure continuity of electricity supply to all areas over the next week, GPL will be suspending non-emergency maintenance activities on our transmission and distribution system for the period 2020 February 29 to 2020 March 6.” GPL’s statement which is also attached in this report states.

While noted stated by the power company, the move appears to be one that has security considerations since Guyana would be holding National and Regional Elections on Monday.

Given the elections, there are a number of polling stations scattered across the country including in outlying areas where information on is expected to be initially channeled to Georgetown through means of internet connection which would require a reliable power supply.

Additionally, there are a number of regional and international observers who are present in Guyana to observe the elections process and they too are expected to fan-out in various parts including remote locations of Guyana.

“GPL’s emergency crews and contractors will remain on alert to address any incidents resulting in or threatening to cause interruptions in supply. Consequently, if there is an emergency, reports can be made to the following numbers for immediate intervention.” The release from the Power Company noted.

Those with any power emergency during the period stated above can contact the following Regional officers on the number listed.
