Ituni Man Convicted of Attempted Murder Following Brutal 2023 Stabbing

January 14 2026
A Demerara High Court jury has found 36-year-old Mark Rodney guilty of attempted murder in connection with a vicious stabbing that left a man seriously injured in Ituni in 2023.
The unanimous verdict was delivered before Justice Jacqueline Josiah-Graham, concluding a trial that examined the violent incident on December 18, 2023.
Rodney had faced charges of attempted murder, with jurors also considering an alternative count of wounding with intent.
The prosecution team included attorneys Marisa Edwards, Joy Williams, and Darin Chan, while Adrian Thompson represented Rodney. Sentencing is scheduled for January 28, 2026.
According to evidence presented in court, the victim, 38-year-old Keon Liverpool, was on his way to visit his sister when an argument broke out near the home of Rodney’s fiancée, Charlene Piggot.
Neighbours reported hearing raised voices and witnessing the confrontation moments before it escalated into violence.
Liverpool was stabbed twice, sustaining injuries to his arm and abdomen.
The abdominal wound, which measured approximately eight centimetres and penetrated the abdominal cavity, caused his intestines to protrude.
Despite the severity of his injuries, Liverpool managed to flee the scene but collapsed in a nearby yard.
He was initially taken to the Linden Hospital Complex before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for emergency treatment.
A doctor who testified at the trial described the abdominal wound as life-threatening and consistent with being inflicted by a sharp instrument such as a knife.
