Bishop’s High Recognized as Model CVQ

December 13, 2024 – The Bishops’ High School has earned distinguished recognition from the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) as a model institution for the implementation and delivery of the Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) program.
Following an extensive evaluation of schools across Guyana, Bishops’ High emerged as a leader in technical and vocational education, exemplifying excellence in preparing students for the modern workforce.
A press statement issued by the Ministry of Education indicates that this accolade underscores the school’s commitment to equipping students with practical skills through a structured curriculum that meets industry demands. By achieving all requirements for CVQ Levels 1 and 2, the school provides students with marketable competencies in fields critical to the evolving job market.
Bishops’ High School has introduced initiatives to ensure students receive a well-rounded education aligned with the region’s economic needs. Teachers and administrators have worked collaboratively to develop robust technical programs, while partnerships with local industries offer students hands-on exposure to real-world practices.
Field trips to industrial sites, factories, and workplaces are integral to the curriculum, bridging the gap between classroom theory and professional application. This real-world exposure prepares students to seamlessly transition into the workforce upon graduation.
In preparation for this recognition, Bishops’ High upgraded its facilities to align with CXC’s rigorous standards. These improvements include enhanced workshops, laboratories, and classrooms equipped with modern tools and safety measures. The upgrades create a professional learning environment, mirroring contemporary industry standards and fostering a culture of safety and skill excellence.
During an announcement ceremony, Deputy Chief Education Officer for Technical Education, Dr. Ritesh Tularam, praised the school’s achievements stating that The Bishops’ High School has demonstrated remarkable commitment to the successful implementation of the CVQ program. It has met or exceeded all requirements, including the quality of its infrastructure, documentation, and delivery mechanisms. This achievement reflects the school’s alignment with the Ministry of Education’s vision for dual certification—academic and technical—for all secondary students.
Dr. Tularam highlighted the Ministry’s vision to ensure students graduate with both CXC and CVQ certifications, equipping them with academic credentials and practical skills for diverse career opportunities.
This recognition follows similar accolades for the New Amsterdam Multilateral School earlier this year, reaffirming Guyana’s leadership in technical and vocational education within the Caribbean. These successes reflect the Ministry of Education’s commitment to integrating vocational training into the national curriculum and fostering inclusive educational pathways.
The Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) program adopts a competency-based approach to training, assessment, and certification. Students are assessed against industry-defined occupational standards approved by CARICOM, earning portable qualifications recognized across the region.
The Bishops’ High School’s accomplishment solidifies its role as a beacon of educational excellence and a model for other institutions aspiring to elevate technical and vocational training standards.
The Ministry of Education celebrates this milestone as part of its broader mission to innovate and enhance education in Guyana. By investing in infrastructure, teacher training, and industry partnerships, the Ministry continues to build a network of model institutions driving progress and inclusivity in education.
Through sustained efforts, Guyana is poised to lead the Caribbean in producing graduates equipped with the skills and certifications needed to thrive in a global economy.
