-to Boost Regional Food Hub and Agricultural Exports
July 9 2025
In a significant step toward enhancing its leadership in food security and agri-business development, the Government of Guyana has entered into a strategic partnership with Bloomberg Grain, a U.S.-based agricultural firm, to market and brand the upcoming regional food hub at Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), held at the Ministry of Agriculture’s main boardroom, marks a major milestone in advancing Guyana’s food security vision. The agreement outlines collaboration on modern marketing and branding strategies aimed at strengthening Guyana’s agricultural exports, cutting post-harvest losses, and increasing market penetration within CARICOM and the broader South American region.
The food hub at Yarrowkabra is part of the government’s broader push to make Guyana a central player in regional food systems. Under this MoU, Bloomberg Grain will provide technical expertise to improve value-chain efficiency, positioning Guyana to achieve higher export volumes and greater economic returns for local farmers.
Officials at the ceremony underscored Guyana’s progress since 2020, noting the country’s restored leadership role in CARICOM’s food security agenda. By prioritizing agriculture as a core pillar of economic diversification, Guyana aims to create a globally competitive non-oil economy.
Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, emphasized the transformational progress Guyana has made since 2020. He said that Guyana is the only country in the world that can feed its citizens. That is a tremendous achievement for us because when we started in 2020, we saw a sector that was run down; Guyana had lost its place in CARICOM. Today, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency Dr. Irfaan Ali, Guyana is leading the food security agenda in the region.
The initiative also reflects strong international collaboration, with U.S. Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, lauding the agreement as a transformative step with the potential to benefit communities across the region.
With this partnership, Guyana is charting a path toward sustainable agricultural growth and increased regional influence, setting the stage for expanded economic opportunities and improved food systems throughout the Caribbean and northern South America.
