New koker planned for Schoonord after boat damage

Residents of Schoonord have seen drainage conditions return to normal following emergency works by the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) after a fishing boat damaged and displaced a koker door.

The incident occurred after the boat reportedly became loose and pressed against the sluice door last evening, causing it to become displaced and allowing water to enter the community.

According to a DPI report, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha said emergency measures were quickly implemented to secure the affected structure and prevent further water from entering the area.

Stop logs were installed to control the movement of water, allowing the affected waterways to be drained and restoring normal conditions in the community.

The temporary system will remain in place while the Government moves to permanently replace the damaged koker door.

Mustapha said the NDIA is expected to begin the necessary tendering process within a month for construction of the new sluice door.

In the interim, the stop logs will be removed when the tide recedes to allow water to drain and reinstated ahead of the incoming tide.

The Government said the temporary measures will help maintain drainage in Schoonord while permanent repairs are pursued.
