A 78-year-old pensioner was violently shoved to the ground and left screaming in agony after a bicycle-riding thief snatched her handbag containing approximately $80,000 shortly after she collected her pension at the Reliance Post Office, East Canje, on Wednesday.
Habiban Karimbaksh said the terrifying ordeal unfolded at around 10:30 a.m., just minutes after she collected two separate pension payments and began walking home.
She had reportedly just turned into a street when a man riding an old bicycle crept up behind her and grabbed her handbag. Karimbaksh said she desperately held on to the bag, but the shirtless man, who was wearing a hat, forcefully pushed her to the ground before making off with it.
The elderly woman, who has undergone knee replacement surgery, was left sprawled on the roadside, screaming for help. Despite her cries, she said, no one came to her assistance.
In pain and struggling to get back on her feet, Karimbaksh eventually managed to stand and make her way back to the post office.
Her stolen handbag contained approximately $80,000, two bank cards, her pension books, cellphone and house keys.
She subsequently reported the robbery at the Reliance Police Station. When she returned to the station on Thursday, November 5, she was reportedly told that the suspect had not yet been apprehended.
