November 22, 2024 – The Carnegie School of Home Economics (CSHE) marked its 92nd anniversary of transformative education and training with a celebratory graduation ceremony, honoring 114 graduates under the theme “Shaping Generations with Creativity and Skills: 92 Years of Transformation in Education and Training.”

This year’s cohort exemplified the breadth of CSHE’s offerings, with certificates and diplomas awarded in diverse areas: Household Management (13), Garment Making Level 1 (7), Interior Decoration (10), General Cosmetology (15), Commercial Food Preparation Level 1 (15), and Catering and Hospitality (54).

Notably, 13 graduates were recipients of the Public Service Ministry (PSM) Scholarship, and others represented vital national institutions, including the Guyana Defence Force (7), Guyana Police Force (4), and Guyana Prison Service (2).

Institutional Impact and Partnerships
Principal Dr. Sharmaine Marshall emphasized CSHE’s commitment to workforce readiness and entrepreneurship, noting the strong industry partnerships that ensure students gain practical experience through internships and attachments. “Our students are often hired directly after their internships, a testament to the quality of training and the relationships we’ve built with industry leaders in hospitality, garment, and cosmetology,” she said.

Encouragement from NCERD Leadership
Delivering the keynote address, Ms. Oma Ramdin, Director of the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD), lauded CSHE’s pivotal role in advancing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). She urged graduates to strive for excellence and embrace challenges, stating, “Your qualification gives you independence and a pathway to success. People are drawn to quality, so be the best at what you do.”

TVET’s Role in Guyana’s Development
TVET has become a cornerstone of Guyana’s educational strategy, designed to equip individuals with practical skills to meet workforce demands locally and globally. CSHE’s programs not only impart technical knowledge but also inspire confidence in students to pursue meaningful careers or entrepreneurial ventures.

A Legacy of Excellence
Since its founding in 1933, CSHE has evolved into Guyana’s premier institution for technical and vocational education, offering innovative programs in hospitality, garment construction, interior design, and cosmetology. Over nine decades, the school has shaped generations of skilled professionals and entrepreneurs, contributing to Guyana’s socio-economic development.

As CSHE celebrates its 92-year legacy, the institution reaffirms its mission to empower individuals through creativity and skills, preparing them to excel and shape the nation’s future. The graduation ceremony stood as a testament to the institution’s enduring impact and the bright potential of its graduates.
