$225M BV PIC Commissioned to Boost TVET in Guyana

March 20, 2025 – The Ministry of Education officially commissioned the Beterverwagting Practical Instructional Centre (PIC) on the East Coast of Demerara, marking a significant milestone in advancing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Guyana.
The $225 million facility, retrofitted and expanded, now offers Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQ) Level 1 training in five key areas: Furniture Making, Commercial Food Preparation, Masonry/Plumbing, Housekeeping, and Garment Production.

During the commissioning ceremony, Education Minister Priya Manickchand emphasized the transformative role of TVET in equipping individuals with skills that provide sustainable livelihoods.
She noted that technical education is a viable alternative to traditional academic pathways, ensuring students have more career options.

The facility, which can accommodate up to 400 students, will support both full-time learners and evening programs for working adults, women, and community members seeking new skills.
Officials, including Deputy Chief Education Officer Dr. Ritesh Tularam and Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain, highlighted how the PIC aligns with the Ministry’s strategic goal of enabling students to graduate with dual certifications—either CXC subjects or CVQ qualifications—enhancing employability prospects.
The centre’s establishment was made possible through collaboration with the Government of Guyana, the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and various regional and local authorities. This initiative is expected to significantly contribute to workforce development by bridging the gap between theoretical education and practical, industry-relevant skills.
