Trio Cleared of Parika Murder

November 1 2024 – Three men accused of the brutal killing of 20-year-old Trevor Allen from Parika Façade, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), have been found not guilty of both murder and manslaughter by a jury at the Demerara High Court.

Justice Jo Ann Barlow presided over the trial, where the jury delivered their verdict on Wednesday, clearing Navindra Sugrim, 21; Chaitram Persaud, 26; and Eashwar Sookdeo, 29, of all charges related to the fatal incident. At the time of the incident, they also resided in Parika.

The charges stemmed from events on October 31, 2021, when Allen was out drinking with his brothers at a neighbourhood shop.

An argument with another individual erupted, resulting in a scuffle.

According to the initial police report, the situation quickly turned deadly as Sugrim, Persaud, and Sookdeo allegedly arrived armed with cutlasses and knives, escalating the altercation into a fatal assault on Allen.

Witnesses described a harrowing scene in which Allen was repeatedly stabbed, sustaining five wounds to the abdomen and a chop to his forehead.

Allen’s brother, Harvey, attempted to intervene but suffered a chop injury and ultimately fled to a nearby canal for safety, where he watched the attack on his brother unfold.

Another suspect in the murder, who had been evading arrest, took his own life by ingesting a poisonous substance.

The acquittals mark the end of the case.
