President of Guyana Dr Irfaan Ali and the country’s Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton today met, as they discussed the situation of Guyana and Venezuela.

The two leaders were joined during the meeting by their representatives and legal teams.

The Government and the Opposition Leader will today issue a joint statement coming out of their meeting.

As the meeting concluded today, Opposition Leader Norton described the meeting as a good one even as Opposition Member of Parliament Khemraj Ramjattan regarded it as successful.

In her comments, Member of Parliament Amanza Walton Desir echoed the sentiments of her fellow Members of Parliament.

The Opposition Members of Parliament explained that both sides found common ground in almost every matter that was raised. It was also noted that going into the meeting, the concerns and solutions that the opposition had in relation to the Guyana/ Venezuela issue were the same concerns and solutions that the government had.

The two sides have also agreed that going forward, educating the population on the matter, the history, and the position of Guyana will be a priority.

The discussions and resolutions on these and other matters which relate to Venezuela will be discussed at the Parliamentary Select Commitment even as the engagements between the Government and Opposition will continue at various levels.

Over the last few months, Venezuela has ramped up its offensive against Guyana through statements and shows of will.

Those actions have caused many Guyanese to call on the government and the opposition to adopt a united approach in addressing the claims and other offensives coming from Venezuela.
