A man now awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to the capital offence of murder over the death of his girlfriend on October 15, 2018.

Durn Hunt, called “Rasta” of Lot 108 Crane Street, Queenstown, Corriverton, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) was indicted for the murder of Itashia Frank, his girlfriend.

When he appeared before Berbice High Court Judge Simone Morris-Ramlall on Tuesday, Hunt opted to plead guilty to the murder charge against him.

Hunt was further remanded to prison pending sentencing which is set for June 27.

On the day in question, an argument ensued between the couple during which Frank attempted to pick up a kitchen knife that was on a cupboard but Hunt grabbed it instead.

They continued arguing, going onto the street where Hunt grabbed Frank and took her to a culvert. But the woman pushed him away in a bid to escape.

She then ran a short distance before falling into a drain. An enraged Hunt jumped into the drain and dealt his partner several stabs to her neck with the same knife.

As Frank resisted, he pushed her head into the muddy water until she became motionless. The confessed killer carried out this brutal act in full view of neighbours.

Meanwhile, a post-mortem examination conducted on the now-dead woman revealed that she died as a result of asphyxiation due to drowning compounded by stab wounds to the neck
