Linden Man Admits to Setting Deadly House Fire that Killed Sister and Niece

November 5 2025
A Linden man who set his family home ablaze, killing his sister and niece in 2023, has admitted to the crime and now awaits sentencing.
Thirty-three-year-old Uhalisi “Akali” Moore of Silvertown, Wismar, Linden, appeared before Acting Chief Justice Navindra Singh at the High Court in Demerara, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of murder.
Sentencing has been scheduled for November 19, 2025.
Moore’s plea stems from the horrific August 14, 2023, fire that claimed the lives of Cheryl Moore and Eukeila Adams, his sister and niece.
Prosecutors Christopher Belfield, Simran Gajraj, and Geneva Wills presented the State’s case against him.
According to the case file, Moore lived in the same two-storey wooden house with several relatives at Silvertown, Wismar, Linden.
On the night of the tragedy, his brother Phillip Moore reported smelling kerosene and hearing noises before spotting Uhalisi armed with a cutlass inside the home.
Alarmed, Phillip retreated to safety, moments before the building went up in flames.
Family members managed to leap from the verandah to escape, but Cheryl and Eukeila were trapped inside.
Firefighters arrived after midnight and extinguished the blaze, but the house was completely gutted.
Cheryl’s remains were recovered around 1:00 a.m., while Eukeila’s body was discovered hours later amid the rubble.
Investigations revealed that Moore deliberately doused furniture with a flammable substance and ignited it.
During a video-recorded confession at the Wismar Police Station, he told detectives that he had been hungry for days and felt ignored by his family, claiming he heard a “voice” compelling him to act.
A post-mortem examination performed by Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh confirmed that both victims died from burns and that soot in their airways showed they were alive when the fire began.
