Guyana Strengthens Healthcare System with US$125M Partnership

March 26 2025- The Government of Guyana, Hess Corporation, and Mount Sinai Health System have formalized a major US$125 million agreement to extend the National Healthcare Initiative for another five years.
This landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims to elevate Guyana’s public healthcare sector to world-class standards by 2030, ensuring widespread access to high-quality medical services.
The signing ceremony took place on Tuesday at State House in Georgetown, with President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali overseeing the event.
The MoU was officially signed by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health Malcolm Watkins, Chair of the Department of Health System Design & Global Health at Mount Sinai Dr. Rachel Vreeman, and Hess Corporation CEO John Hess.
Advancing Healthcare Transformation
The initiative, which began in 2022, is a collaborative effort between Guyana, Mount Sinai, and Hess Corporation to enhance healthcare accessibility and quality.
The newly launched second phase will focus on the establishment of a National Cancer Centre, modernization of healthcare facilities, and the integration of advanced digital health technologies. Additionally, efforts will be made to promote community-based healthcare programs.
A key aspect of this transformation includes a digital shift in patient care management. The government is developing a mobile application to provide real-time health updates and allow patients to schedule hospital appointments across the country.
Vision 2030: Embracing Digital Healthcare
Under the Vision 2030 framework, an integrated electronic health record system will be introduced, streamlining medical documentation and ensuring seamless access to patient records for authorized healthcare providers.
Plans are also in place to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics into diagnostic and patient care processes, advancing Guyana’s medical infrastructure toward a nearly paperless system.
Since the launch of Phase I, all initial objectives have been met, paving the way for more comprehensive healthcare improvements. The government’s long-term plan aims to establish a robust system offering specialized services in oncology, cardiology, orthopedics, pediatrics, and prenatal care, aligning with international medical standards.
A Model for Regional Healthcare
With this initiative, Guyana seeks to position itself as a leader in healthcare within the region. The collaboration with Mount Sinai will enable local doctors to receive specialized training, integrating them into an internationally recognized medical platform.
The government envisions a future where the country’s hospitals will rival top-tier global healthcare institutions, featuring cutting-edge technology and pioneering medical interventions.
The partnership underscores Hess Corporation’s commitment to supporting healthcare advancements in Guyana for generations to come. Mount Sinai’s continued involvement is expected to accelerate progress in creating a healthier population and a more sophisticated medical system.
The ceremony was also attended by Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony, Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance and Public Service Dr. Ashni Singh, U.S. Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot, and other senior officials.
