More unvaccinated persons dying – Minister of Health

The government continues to appeal to persons to get vaccinated against COVID-19. On Monday, Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony said that more than 129 persons are in various hospitals.

Guyana recorded some 36 deaths in the last week, “All of them were unvaccinated,” Dr Anthony told the Department of Public Information during his daily interview, “so it begs the question, why it is people are not getting vaccinated, because we know that if you are vaccinated you wouldn’t get the severe form of the disease and you wouldn’t be coming into the hospital.”

29 persons are in ICU at the Ocean View Hospital. There are a total of 92 persons at that hospital six of whom are maternal cases, while another nine maternal cases are at Georgetown Public Hospital.

Many of these persons remain unvaccinated Dr Anthony maintains, “We are seeing that a lot of the people who are ending up in the hospital are the unvaccinated, so we want to really urge people, who have not gotten their vaccines as yet to go out and get their vaccines.”

Today the minister said that some 334,333 first doses were administered which represents 65.2% of adult population, some 173,000 persons received their 2nd doses,  33.9% of the adult population, “We are still a far way from herd immunity here,” Dr Anthony said.
