A man who snatched a teenager’s phone before jumping into a drain to avoid being arrested by the Police, was on Wednesday remanded to prison on a robbery charge. Andrew Khan of 154 Cooper Street, Albouystown appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

He denied the charge which stated that on June 26, 2021, at Regent Street, he robbed Darshanie Persaud of one Samsung phone value $116,000. He was remanded to prison until July 14.

The court prosecutor said that on the day in question, at around 15:15 hrs, the victim was on Regent Street Georgetown in the company of her father Rajendra Persaud in a cellular phone store. The virtual complainant then left the store to join her mother and sister who were in a motor car.

While waiting to cross the street, Khan rode up on a cycle and grabbed the phone from her hand. She then raised an alarm and her dad gave chase behind him.

In the process, two police ranks gave chase behind him. In an attempt to evade the Police, Khan plunged into a nearby drain where he spent some time hiding. The Police ranks placed gloves on their hands and began feeling in the drain to locate the suspect.

After a while, a citizen volunteered to go into the drain to aid the Police with arresting him. At this point, Khan came out and surrendered to the Police.
