Essequibo rice farmers receive cash relief

July 4 2026
The Government on Saturday commenced the distribution of cash relief to rice farmers, with the first exercise taking place at Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha were on hand for the launch of the initiative, which delivers on a commitment made by the President during consultations with hundreds of rice farmers at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre in April.
The cash relief programme is intended to provide targeted support to rice farmers as the industry continues to face increasing global challenges affecting agricultural production and markets.
Under the initiative, farmers cultivating 50 acres or less will receive $15,000 per acre, while those cultivating more than 50 acres will receive $10,000 per acre.
The Government has said the intervention forms part of its continued efforts to support the agricultural sector and safeguard the livelihoods of rice farmers across the country.
