Diamond Secondary School Unveils New Sixth Form and Administrative Blocks

July 25, 2025
The Diamond Secondary School has officially commissioned two major infrastructural additions—a brand-new Sixth Form block and an upgraded administrative block—marking a significant milestone in the school’s ongoing development.
The Sixth Form facility, constructed at a cost of $95 million by the Ministry of Education, forms part of the government’s wider push to expand access to advanced secondary education across the country. Meanwhile, the administrative block was completed by the Regional Democratic Council (RDC).

During the commissioning ceremony, Deputy Headteacher of the school emphasized the life-changing power of education, encouraging students to pursue academic excellence and prepare themselves for the demands of a competitive world. She also expressed gratitude to Minister of Education Priya Manickchand for her continued support and vision.
In her remarks, Minister Manickchand reflected on the school’s challenges, recalling the devastating 2018 fire that destroyed a major building, forcing students and staff to use the auditorium as makeshift classrooms. Although a structure was initially built to replace it, the Ministry declined to open it due to unsatisfactory construction standards. After necessary enhancements were made, a decision was taken to construct an entirely new block to better serve the school’s needs.

The new Sixth Form facility includes six modern classrooms, a fully-equipped IT laboratory with 40 stations, and a new library. With the addition of these amenities, students previously housed in the auditorium will now be accommodated in proper classrooms.
Diamond Secondary now offers 23 subjects at the CSEC level and 16 CAPE subjects, making it one of four CAPE-accredited secondary schools established in recent years under the Ministry’s expansion programme. These advancements ensure that students across Guyana have greater access to high-quality education at the Sixth Form level.

The school currently has a staff of 64 teachers, six of whom are currently enrolled in teacher training colleges. Once certified, the institution will have a fully trained teaching workforce, positioning it to deliver education more effectively and respond to student needs with greater professionalism.
The newly commissioned blocks stand as a symbol of the government’s commitment to transforming the education sector and creating opportunities for students to excel both locally and globally.
