Government to Build New Berbice Bridge – Pres. Ali

In addition to other key projects to develop the Berbice region, including a deep-water port, the Palmyra Stadium, and the expansion of the Corentyne Highway, President Irfaan Ali has strongly defended his administration’s modernization plans aimed at improving interconnectivity between the counties of Berbice and Demerara, which are expected to significantly enhance travel, transportation, trade, and overall development for all Guyanese.
Speaking at the Contract signing ceremony for the Rehabilitation of the Linden-Soesdyke Highway yesterday, the President criticized the opposition’s Alliance for Change (AFC) for what he described as unfounded and politically motivated objections to the government’s plan to construct a new high-span fixed bridge across the Berbice River.
This new bridge is set to replace the current structure, which has been in place since 2009, and will be designed to accommodate the significant economic growth taking place in Region Six.
President Ali pointed out that his administration has already issued a Request for Prequalification for contractors to design, build, and finance the bridge, underscoring the government’s commitment to moving forward with this critical infrastructure initiative, despite the AFC’s objections.
The President has accused the AFC of politicizing development efforts and attempting to undermine progress in the region, pointing out their role in obstructing significant projects, such as the Amaila Falls Hydro-power project, which delayed the country’s shift towards renewable energy.
President Ali reiterated his administration’s commitment to nationwide development, affirming that transformative projects like the Berbice bridge will continue to be prioritized to improve the lives of all Guyanese.
