The EU is not in Guyana because of oil- Ambassador

European Union Ambassador to Guyana, Luca Pierantoni, says the EU’s relationship with Guyana is built on decades of cooperation and is not solely tied to the country’s rapidly expanding oil and gas industry.

Speaking at a Europe Day reception at Herdmanston Lodge on earlier this evening, Ambassador Pierantoni noted that the European Union has maintained a presence in Guyana since the country gained independence and has supported national development long before the emergence of the oil sector.

The Ambassador also sought to reassure local businesses and policymakers about the stability of trade relations between Guyana and Europe amid growing global uncertainty.

He pointed to the Economic Partnership Agreement between the two sides, which he said provides predictable trading conditions without sudden tariff changes.

Pierantoni described Guyana as a country undergoing major economic and social transformation, adding that the EU sees significant opportunities for expanded collaboration in business, education, technology, research, and cultural exchange.

He highlighted the EU’s involvement in areas such as forest conservation, trade cooperation, and development support, describing the bloc as a reliable long-term partner.

According to the Ambassador, the EU is working to strengthen ties between European and Guyanese institutions through initiatives under its Global Gateway programme. He referenced recent business missions involving sectors such as healthcare, agro-processing, digital technology, and connectivity.

The Ambassador said the European Union remains committed to Guyana and the wider Caribbean as a long-term partner and ally.
