Young scientists to benefit from advanced agriculture training

June 12 2026
Young scientists and agricultural researchers from Guyana and across the Caribbean are set to benefit from advanced training and research opportunities through a new Science, Technology and Innovation Hub being established in Guyana.
The initiative is a collaboration among Guyana, Brazil and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and is aimed at supporting agricultural transformation and strengthening regional food security.
Speaking at the signing ceremony for the hub on Tuesday, Muhammad Ibrahim said the agriculture sector requires a new generation of professionals equipped with modern scientific tools and technologies to drive innovation and improve food systems.
As part of the initiative, discussions are already underway to facilitate training opportunities with Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, one of Brazil’s leading agricultural research institutions. The programme is expected to give young scientists from Guyana and the wider Caribbean hands-on exposure to advanced agricultural technologies and innovative farming practices.
Participants are expected to receive training in areas such as biotechnology, improved seed production systems, climate-smart agriculture and modern research techniques that have contributed to Brazil’s success as a major global food producer.
Officials said the hub, the first of its kind in the Caribbean, will serve as a centre for research, technology transfer, innovation and capacity building, helping to strengthen the region’s agricultural sector and develop a new generation of skilled agricultural professionals.
