Guyana on Tuesday launched the Caribbean Sustainable Agriculture Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Hub, a major regional initiative aimed at advancing agricultural innovation, strengthening food security and accelerating the adoption of modern farming technologies across the Caribbean.

The hub is being established through a partnership involving Guyana’s Ministry of Agriculture, Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).

The initiative is designed to promote scientific research, expand technical capacity and support the development of innovative solutions tailored to the challenges and opportunities of tropical agriculture.

Speaking at the launch, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha said the hub represents a significant step in the region’s efforts to modernise agriculture and improve food production through science and technology.

He noted that Guyana stands to benefit from the expertise of EMBRAPA, one of the world’s leading agricultural research institutions, which operates more than 40 research centres and employs thousands of scientists.

Director General of IICA, Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim, described the hub as an important tool for driving innovation and strengthening resilience within the region’s agrifood systems.

He said the initiative will support the goals of the regional 25 by 2025 +5 food security agenda while helping to modernise agriculture, increase youth and women’s participation in the sector, and promote sustainable development.

Once operational, the STI Hub is expected to serve as the Caribbean’s leading platform for South-South cooperation in tropical agriculture, helping to accelerate technological advancement, strengthen food security and enhance the competitiveness of the region’s agricultural sector.
