GECOM and UNDP Host Strategic Communications Workshop

June 28, 2025 — In a collaborative effort to strengthen electoral transparency and integrity, the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with support from the Government of the United Kingdom, hosted a one-day workshop focused on enhancing strategic communication for electoral processes.
Held at the United Nations House in Georgetown, the workshop titled “Strengthening Communication Strategies for Electoral Integrity” brought together GECOM officials, civic educators, and electoral experts to address the critical role of communication in building public trust, especially in the context of the upcoming 2025 general elections.
The initiative reflects a joint commitment by GECOM, UNDP, and the UK to ensure that Guyana’s electoral process remains transparent, inclusive, and credible. With the rapid evolution of information dissemination and the growing threat of disinformation, the workshop underscored the importance of timely, accurate, and strategic public engagement.
Key topics covered during the sessions included:
-
Civic and voter education strategies
-
Promoting information integrity and combating disinformation
-
Anticipating and responding to public information needs
-
Crisis communication and rapid response planning
-
Building productive relationships with the media
-
Effective management of social media and digital platforms
Participants engaged in interactive discussions, scenario-based exercises, and peer learning activities, all aimed at enhancing institutional readiness and public outreach efforts.
A major outcome of the workshop was the creation of a unified, GECOM-branded communications identity for the 2025 elections. Additionally, strategies were formulated to engage diverse segments of the electorate, including first-time voters, youth, women, persons with disabilities, and traditionally marginalized communities.
The session concluded with a reinforced commitment by both GECOM and UNDP to continue building institutional communication capacity and to promote peaceful, informed, and inclusive participation in Guyana’s democratic process.
This initiative marks another step in the ongoing partnership between national and international stakeholders to uphold electoral integrity and civic confidence across Guyana.
