USD$133M Ogle-Eccles Highway Commissioned

June 30 2025
A formal commissioning ceremony was held this evening at the Ogle Airport Junction for the newly completed Ogle to Eccles Highway, marking a major milestone in Guyana’s infrastructural development. The project, which began in June 2022, was undertaken by Indian construction firm Ashoka Buildcon Limited.
Originally conceptualized as a link road between Haags Bosch and Ogle, the initiative evolved into a full-fledged highway. The initial cost was estimated at US$106.4 million, but increased as the scope expanded to USD$133.8M, to accommodate the highway design.
The 11.63-kilometre Ogle to Eccles four-lane highway is expected to reduce travel time and foster significant economic activity.
The new four-lane thoroughfare will soon be connected to the new Demerara River Bridge, facilitating easier travel between the East Coast and West Bank corridors. President Dr. Irfaan Ali, who delivered the feature address, emphasized the transformative impact of the project on national development.
Ashoka Buildcon has also been contracted to continue the roadway from Eccles to Providence. Government officials confirmed that the rate charged for this new section will remain consistent with the Ogle to Eccles pricing structure.
In his address, President Ali dismissed criticisms from detractors, stating,
“To those who say you can’t eat roads, something is wrong with your brain. It’s not about eating road; it’s about building opportunity. It’s not about eating road; it’s about investing in people. It’s not about eating road; it’s about creating jobs. It’s not about eating road; it’s about building a transformative, modern Guyana.”
The Ogle to Eccles Highway is a key component of the government’s broader infrastructure agenda aimed at reducing travel time, stimulating economic activity, and improving connectivity across regions
