$15.1B Four-Lane Highway Commissioned in Reg Three

The Government of Guyana has officially commissioned the $15.1 billion Schoonard to Crane Four-Lane Highway, marking a historic milestone as the first of its kind in Region Three (Essequibo Islands- West Demerara).
The ceremony took place today at the Schoonard Roundabout, with key government officials in attendance.
Minister within the Ministry of Housing, Susan Rodrigues, emphasized the unprecedented development and investment in Region Three, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing the lives of its residents.
She noted that President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s ambitious vision for the region and the country is matched by the administration’s capacity and dedication to completing transformative projects.
Minister Rodrigues added that the highway aims to address longstanding concerns about commuting challenges, making travel in and out of the region more comfortable and convenient for all.
Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, underscored the highway’s potential to stimulate economic growth by creating jobs and boosting commercial activity.
He posited that the new infrastructure will reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion, and unlock new opportunities for the region, noting that this highway bodes well for the long-term viability of West Demerara and its prospects for future development.
President Dr. Irfaan Ali, in his remarks, outlined the broader strategic significance of the highway. He revealed plans to extend the highway to Wales Village and eventually to Parika, opening up thousands of acres of land for housing and agriculture.
The President highlighted the interconnected infrastructure projects that will link Regions 3, 4, and 10 to Bartica and the mining communities, positioning Guyana as a major transport and logistics hub.
He emphasized that these investments will drive rapid population growth in the region, with significant opportunities in tourism and other sectors.
President Ali declared that Region Three is poised to be the fastest growing in the country, and the scale and speed of development are enormous, while underscoring the transformative impact of the new highway on the region’s future.
