Strong winds, heavy rain main cause of power outage

June 24 2026
The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) says it is responding to multiple reports of damage to its electricity network as a squall continues to impact several parts of the country.
Strong winds and heavy rainfall have affected sections of Georgetown, East Demerara, parts of West Demerara, the Essequibo Coast and Leguan, resulting in power outages in a number of communities.
GPL reported receiving complaints of fallen utility poles, damaged network infrastructure and vegetation coming into contact with power lines.
Technical teams have been deployed to conduct inspections and assess the extent of the damage, while restoration works are being carried out where weather conditions allow. The company noted that continued adverse weather may hinder access to some areas and delay repairs.
GPL is urging contractors, equipment operators and residents to exercise extreme caution around the electricity network, warning that high winds can weaken infrastructure and create hazardous conditions.
The utility company advised members of the public to stay clear of downed wires, damaged poles and other compromised electrical equipment, stressing that all fallen wires should be treated as live and dangerous.
Customers are encouraged to report damaged infrastructure or hazardous conditions by calling 226-2600 or sending a message to GPL’s emergency WhatsApp number at 608-9090.
GPL said it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available, while apologizing to customers for the inconvenience caused by the service interruptions.
