A man accused of murdering a young businessman in 2023 has pleaded guilty, bringing an end to trial proceedings in the matter.
Yogendra Sukhdeo admitted to the murder of 21-year-old Amit Singh during an appearance before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court. Sentencing has been scheduled for July 9.
Sukhdeo had been charged in connection with the death of Singh, a resident of Delph Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, who was killed on October 24, 2023.
The matter had been slated for trial before a jury, with the prosecution expected to call several witnesses. However, Sukhdeo’s guilty plea means the trial will no longer proceed.
Singh’s body was discovered at a property on Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, after relatives reported him missing.
Singh was robbed and bludgeoned to death. A post-mortem examination found that he died from multiple injuries, including blunt force trauma to the head, face and neck.
According to previous reports, Singh, a gold dealer got acquainted with Sukhdeo through similar business transaction in the past. When Sukhdeo contacted him about a lucrative gold deal, Singh agreed. Sukhdeo had told police that he picked up Singh from his Delph Street and Campbelle Avenue home in a vehicle with a false number plate.
He drove Singh to a house he was taking care of at Middle Road and beat him to death with a piece of wood. Sukhdeo reportedly said that he had also attempted to strangle Singh.
After killing the young businessman, he took possession of the money and wrapped the body in a sheet. He then locked up the house and went to his home at Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) where he hid the stolen cash.
Police recovered almost $8M in cash from Sukhdeo’s bedroom. He had led detectives to his home at 20th Avenue Diamond Housing Scheme to find the money.
