A 39-year-old carpenter who is accused of killing his cousin’s boyfriend was on Wednesday charged with murder.  He was remanded to prison until May 20, 2021. Neale Benjamin of 355 Non-Pareil East Coast Demerara,  appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts.

He was not required to plea to the indictable charge which stated that on April 24, 2021, at ‘A’ field Sophia Greater Georgetown, he murdered Devon Xavier, age 20-year-old.

According to reports, on the day in question, Xavier went to pay a visit to his girlfriend in Sophia, and while they were talking her father and her cousin (Benjamin) approached. The girlfriend told Xavier that he had to leave because her relatives are not in favour of their relationship.

Her father then instructed her to go inside the house, but in the process, her cousin grabbed Xavier, took out a knife from the waist of his pants, and dealt him a stab to his right side chest causing him to receive injury and collapse to the ground.  He then made good his escape.

The injured man was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The matter was reported and following investigation, Benjamin was arrested and charged with the offense.
