A seven-month-old baby girl who was allegedly taken from her parents’ home in Port Kaituma, Region One, has been found in West Demerara, with a 20-year-old Venezuelan national who was employed as the child’s babysitter now in police custody.
Carlys Albert was found around 11:20 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, at Hague Backdam, West Coast Demerara, where police acting on information received located the infant in the care of the babysitter.
The baby has since been safely reunited with her parents and was reported to be in good health.
The child’s mother, Maylet Rampersaud, told BIG Smith News Watch that she and her husband, both of whom are employed, hired the woman about a month ago to care for their three young daughters.
Rampersaud said the babysitter was not well known to the family and had allegedly given them a fictitious name. The woman had been living at their home, and the mother said she had not suspected anything was wrong.
“She was living at our home. I never suspected anything,” Rampersaud said.
According to the mother, she and her husband left for work at around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, leaving the babysitter at home with the children.
The woman allegedly dressed baby Carlys, packed a bag and told the two older girls that she was going to drop off some things and would return in a few minutes with the baby.
However, several hours passed without the woman returning. The children eventually contacted their parents, who then alerted the police.
Photographs of the missing infant were circulated on social media as the search for her intensified. The circulation reportedly assisted in locating the baby and the babysitter at Hague Backdam.
Police said an Inspector and a team of ranks proceeded to the location after receiving information and found the infant in the care and custody of the 20-year-old woman, who was identified as a babysitter from Oronoque, Port Kaituma.
The woman was arrested and taken into custody, while the infant was placed in the care of the police before being safely returned to her family.
The babysitter remains in police custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the infant’s removal from Port Kaituma to West Demerara.
